Lesson and Objectives of Lesson:
Lesson 1: The
purpose of this lesson is to:

- Familiarize you with the Blackboard learning environment.
- Make you aware of course requirements in general.
- Give you an introduction to the Internet, the World Wide Web, client-server networks and
network protocols. Make you aware of the role the web browser plays and the
roll of HTML in the creation of web pages.
Lesson 2:
HTML Basics:
at the end of this unit you will:

- Have have been given an overview of the format of a simple HTML document.
- Be familiar with and proficient in using, a small set for HTML tags.
- Have had experimented with these same tags in a controlled online environment.
- Have created on your own, a simple web page, saved to your local hard disk, which
you will be able to view from your local machine using your browser. (Because your
local machine is not a Web Server, your page will only be viewable from
your local machine.)
Lesson 3: After completing this unit you should be able to:

- Setup the FTP program WS_FTP, to connect to your Unix account on the Sun server named
Packard.
- Upload files and directories from your local hard drive to your account on the server,
so that they will be displayed in a browser window from anywhere on the internet.
Lesson 4:
At the end of this unit students will be able to:

- Demonstrate an ability, using the font <FONT> tag, to change the
various attributes of text, including size, face, and color.
- Demonstrate an ability to alter the color of text using the Hexadecimal color system,
the RGB color system or through known words.
- Understand the reason for using browser safe colors.
- Demonstrate an ability, within the body <BODY> tag, to change the
color (s) of the background and links.
- Demonstrate the ability to use the horizontal rule tag <HR> with
its various attributes.
- Demonstrate the ability to use the alignment options: LEFT, CENTER, RIGHT,. within the
<P></P>,
<HR> or
various heading tags.
- Demonstrate the correct format for closing container tags, when multiple tags are used
to modify the same text.
- Understand the differences between logical and explicit text styles and demonstrate
their appropriate uses.
Lesson 5: At the
end of this unit students will be able to..

- Understand the purpose of a hyperlink and demonstrate an ability to create hyperlinks
with use of the anchor <A> tag and the hypertext reference <HREF> tag.
- Understand the differences between absolute and relative URLs.
- Demonstrate an ability to create hyperlinks with use of both relative and absolute URLs.
- Demonstrate an ability to create hyperlinks with use of the name attribute
and understand when a "name" link is appropriate to use.
- Demonstrate an ability to create "mailto" link.

Lesson 6: We could spend the entire course studying graphics for the internet, but
because of time limitations, this will of necessity, be a quick overview of web graphics.
What I hope you gain from this introduction:
You will know how to use the IMAGE tag <IMG></IMG>
to insert graphics into your Web page.
You will have a familiarity with graphic file formats used on the
Internet; GIF, JPEG and PNG.
You will be able to specify the advantages and disadvantages of each file format,
and understand when it is most appropriate to use each format.
You will have a familiarity with transparent Gifs which
allow for one color in an image to be transparent.
You will have a familiarity with interlaced Gifs which
appear gradually on the screen in increasingly sharper layers.
You will have a familiarity with animated GIFs, which
can add movement and interest to your Web page.
A sensitivity toward the size and number of images used on a web page,
as they impact the speed with which a page will load.
You will be knowledgeable and respectful of copyright laws!
You will have a basic working knowledge of a graphics creation program, MacroMedia
Fireworks, to the extent that you will be able to create a simple button and text
image.
Lesson 7: Specific objectives

Demonstrate an ability to incorporate different background patterns
into web documents and understand the appropriateness of backgrounds given the color of
text.

Demonstrate an ability to create alternate text messages
for images for browsers that do not support images, (or used by screen readers, for
visually impared people).

Demonstrate an ability to alter image alignment attributes.

Demonstrate an ability to wrap text around images and
alter the space between text and images.

Demonstrate an ability to change the size of an image with use of the height
and width attributes.

Demonstrate an ability to create hyperlinks with images
and remove the link border.

Demonstrate an ability to customize horizontal rules and bullets with
graphic files.

Demonstrate an ability to convert file formats,
resize or crop an image, create a

various shapes and inc orporate them in to a web document.

overlapping shapes.

- Understand when tables are appropriate to use in a web document and how they can be
used as a tool to clearly present complicated information.
- Understand the fundamental parts of a table.
- Demonstrate an ability to create a table to organize information in a web document.
- Demonstrate the ability to alter the attributes of a table including, table
headings, size, table captions, and width and height
of rows and columns.
- Demonstrate an ability to alter the alignment of table cell data.
- Demonstrate an ability to alter the column and row
span of a table.
- Demonstrate an ability to alter table border widths,
cell spacing, cell padding, table cell
color and background image.
- Demonstrate an ability to align a entire table within a web
document.
- Understand the purpose of nested tables and demonstrate an ability to create
nested tables.
Lesson 10 & Lesson 11:
At the completion of Units 10 & 11, the student will be able to:

Demonstrate an ability to create forms in a web document that include
the following attributes: name, type, value, size, and maximum length.

Understand how combining forms and tables creates a clearer and
better organized presentation.

to a form.

Demonstrate an ability to customize form buttons using graphic files.

Understand the purpose a CGI script serves with relation to forms and
how information is retrieved in a meaningful way.

- Understand the practical precautions of using framed pages within a web

the various targets for the linked material within frames.
