Help using WS_FTP on the Regal Server

I have graphically illustrated the steps you will follow to use WS_FTP to publish pages on you web server account below.  Because there are so many large images included, I've inserted thumbnail images which are hyperlinks to open the full sized picture when you need to view it.

Once WS_FTP is  installed on your local hard drive, run the WS_FTP program. You will see a window that looks like the one below:

WSFTP1.gif (5192 bytes)

Login:

[Top]

Enter the Host Name/Address as I have in the picture below.  Enter your own Unique Name for User ID (not the demcquir displayed here), and your own  password.   Then press OK.

Login Problems:

[Top]

If the password or User ID you entered is not correct you will see a message like that below.  Notice the error message at the bottom of the screen in red.

LoginFail.gif (15946 bytes)

Try again a couple of times, be aware that your unique name, login ID and your password are case sensitive, make sure you are typing the correct upper or lower case letters. Review my notes on Login and Password information.

If you are really stuck, send Jim Norcross an email asking for a new password for your Regal account. His office is in room 102H Murchie Science Building, or you can Email Jim at:

norcross@umflint.edu   He will need to know:

  1. Your course  number, i.e. 263
  2. Your Unique Name
  3. What you would like to use as your password.

When the connection is complete you will see a screen something like the following:

WSFTPlogin.gif (16546 bytes)

Note, the left window is a view of your local systems hard drive structure.   The window on the right is a view of your storage space on the Regal server.   You you should have a folder already created named: public_html

The Regal server is set up so that the only files that can be viewed on the web are those in the public_html folder or stored in a folder within the public_html folder .  Therefore all of your pages and images must be contained in that folder.

Navigating directories using WS_FTP

[Top]

  • Double-clicking a folder name will open the folder.   i.e. in the image below the folder public_html is selected, now double clicking on the folder will open the folder.

  • Selecting a folder then pressing the ChgDir button on the right side of the window will also change to the selected directory.

  • The Green up arrow will move you up a level up in the directory structure.

Using the directory navigation arrows in WS_FTP, change the remote site (Regal Server) to the public_html folder.

CDpublic_html.gif (16223 bytes)

Then change the local system window, to your 263 folder, so that the view looks something like the following image.

CDChgDir.gif (16419 bytes)

Transferring Files and Folders to the Web Server

[Top]

Select the files or directories on your local system that you wish to transfer to the web server, then use the direction arrows (see mouse cursor location in image below) to transfer the files to the Remote Site. (You can also drag the file names to the Remote window.)

TransfImgFolder.gif (14793 bytes)

When you transfer an entire folder (subdirectory) to you will see a warning message such as this:

CopyFolderMsg.gif (2848 bytes)

Select the Yes button.

And you should see the folder created on your Regal Web Server account.   If you do not see the folder press the Refresh button on the right side of the Remote Site window.

TransferImgAfter.gif (14908 bytes)

Renaming Files on the Regal Server.

RenameFile.gif (14024 bytes)

A message box will be displayed, where you are to enter the new filename.  Then select the OK button.

RenameFile2.gif (2086 bytes)

Deleting Files using WS_FTP

[Top]

Select the file or folder, then press the Delete button on the right of the window.  You will be given an option to verify that you wish to delete this file.  Select Yes or No to complete the transaction.

DeleteFile.gif (17113 bytes)

Note

  1. If you try to delete a folder that contains other files you will not be successful.  See the message in red near the cursor at the bottom of the screen,  I received when I tried to remove my images folder which was not empty.  To delete this folder you will need to use WSFTP to go into the folder and delete all files and remove all folders that are contained within this folder.  Then move up a level using the green arrow key and delete the original folder you wanted to get rid of.

  2. The screen captures images here were taken from the old web server named packard.  In the title bar when you transfer files,  you should see in the title bar:
    WS_FTP LE regal.flint.umich.edu

DeleteFail.gif (13133 bytes)

Miscellaneous Information:

[Top]

  1. After making a change to your remote or local folder, you may need to press the Refresh Button to view the changes within the FTP windows.

  2. You can order the way in which files are displayed in WSFTP's local or remote windows from Alphabetical - ascending or descending or  By Date again either ascending or descending.

    • To veiw files sorted by name, click the Name bar at the top of the window.  Click it again and files will be displayed in descending order.

    • To view files sorted by Date Click the Date column heading at the top of the local or remote window.  Again clicking the column heading twice reverses the sorted ordering.

GOOD LUCK!!  Once you've set up the program and are able to login successfully, I think you will find WS_FTP an easy to use program.
